Make sure you do Brothers pre-required procedures by clicking here. This user asks how to get their scanner working, but you give instructions on how to install the printer drivers. It works great, and I didn’t even work up a sweat.
This being a brother device I do know that they can be a pain to get both printer and scanning capabilities to work correctly in any Linux distrobution if it isn’t supported. The Sane Projects list of supported devices can be found here.

You can find linux drivers made by Brother here. In a matter of 30 minutes, including the read-time, I had the complete package installed and working. The photo copy part works OK to.
I did consider, briefly, getting another Canon product. Linnux to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux? This book contains many real life examples derived from the author’s experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant.
